The theme of the exhibition is the relationship between pedagogy and architecture and the role that institutions dedicated to education and teaching play in the context of the city. The Italian-Swiss Educational Centre (CEIS) was founded in Rimini in 1946 by the Swiss Workers’ Relief Organisation with the aim of creating a village for children and adolescents aged 3 to 14, where educational programmes for the integration of individuals with relationship difficulties could be elaborated. For seventy years, the institute has been a point of reference for the city and for those involved in pedagogy. The founder, Swiss educator Margherita Zoebeli (1912-1996), arrived in Rimini together with a young architect, Felix Schwarz (1917- 2013), who studied and worked with Aldo van Eyck, who, in those very years, was experimenting with his playgrounds, places of fun and games located in city centres. The events surrounding CEIS provide an opportunity to explore a constellation of intertwined stories and themes: from the work of Swiss organisations in the field of child protection to the theme of transnational history and memory; from the debate on the relationship between pedagogy and architecture in Italy in the 1950s and the importance of Margherita Zoebeli to the intertwining of Swiss and Italian architecture between the Second World War and the reconstruction period. Finally, the central focus of the discussion will be the significant contribution to the history of CEIS made by architect and IUAV professor Giancarlo De Carlo (1919-2005), with the design for the Betulla building, and then with the master plan for a new complex, designed with Armando Barp (1939-2026), which was eventually never built. The exhibition is accompanied by the screening of two short films, by architect Felix Schwarz and Prof. Marco Bertozzi (Iuav University of Venice) respectively.
