This workshop, a collaboration between the Department of Architecture (gta Institute, Visiting Professor Alona Nitzan-Shiftan) and the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences (D-GESS, Prof. Dr. Andreas Kilcher) at ETH Zurich, explores the Levant as a dynamic nexus of intertwined modernities from the mid-nineteenth century to the Second World War. It examines the intimate relationship between diverse aesthetic formations and their coeval emergence through transpatialization (Schayegh) and trans-imperial process by which cities, regions, states, and global networks are formed through their mutual interaction across spatial scales. Building on the region's long-standing networks of urban exchange, mobility, trade, infrastructure, institutions, and cultural interaction, we examine how its links between Asia, Africa, and Europe unsettled fixed territorial boundaries. Instead, the Levant turned into a fertile ground for the emergence of modern forms shaped simultaneously by Ottoman, imperial, colonial, national, and global processes.
